Volkswagen isn’t pretending that the current Tiguan is a straight-line hero. In SEL R-Line Turbo form, it looks apart, but with 268 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, it’s not quick enough to beat a Toyota RAV4 GR Sport in a straight sprint.
However, Wolfsburg appears ready to change that narrative as it plans to develop a hotter Tiguan R that will develop more than 300 horsepower. As a matter of fact, a pre-production test mule was caught on shots in Sweden while performing real winter testing.
Visual Changes
As we can depict from the spy shots, the new 2027 Tiguan R will feature subtle changes around the body. One can see the new quad exhaust tips or beefier brakes with drilled brake discs visible behind relatively unassuming wheels. Around back, a quad-exit exhaust system peeks out beneath a faux diffuser.
Nevertheless, there are reports that the new model will be even newer with regard to aesthetics; this is only a mule undergoing its initial test run after all. This implies that the production will be more aggressive in the bumper, more sporty in the wheels, have a more aggressive roof spoiler, silver wing mirrors, or even an R badge on the tailgate. The message will be more obvious once the camouflage and development trim are gone.
Powertrain
What counts beneath the hood are the figures, as opposed to the ornamental signs. Taking into account the existing model, which has 315 horsepower, provided by a flat-four turbocharged 2.0-liter engine, the new R will be more powerful. It is not known how much, but sources list the output at approximately 360 hp, and that would place it in the same ranks as the RAV4 GR Sport, which only produces 320 hp.
The bigger question surrounds availability in different markets worldwide. For instance, rumors have it that there is no guarantee that the model will reach the shores of the United States. This is due to production issues, since the model is built in countries subject to tariffs. And with the US, the problem is that President Trump is currently imposing high tariffs on some of the European carmakers, including Volkswagen Group.
However, in case it is available in the US, the new 2026 R version will likely exceed $50,000, which is not that much, given that the current SEL R-Line Turbo variant is sold in the US for $44,560.
It remains to be seen if the model will arrive in the US in the third quarter of the year. In Europe, it is expected to debut in September.
