The current Skoda Octavia RS also falls into the category of hot hatches because of its fast and aggressive engine, good handling, spacious interior, and reasonable pricing. Skoda has been using the current Octavia as a platform to test various models and is now upgrading the power and aesthetics of the Octavia RS Plus model. However, as an automobile enthusiast and a fan of a hot hatch, I am waiting with anticipation to see what changes will be made.
Engine and Performance Upgrades
The model tested in the spy photoshoot is the 2015 Octavia RS Plus and it is not easy to distinguish it from a standard RS at first sight. However, it might not come with an advanced 2.0-litre TSI turbo-petrol motor churning out roughly 230 horsepower – a substantial increase from the regular RS’s 220 horsepower. The power will most probably be distributed to the front wheels with the help of a 6-speed DSG automatic transmission. I think this extra power will put the already nimble RS at an even higher energy level to drive. The only thing that should have gone with it was the all-wheel-drive system; however, to expect that at this price range is wishful thinking.
Exterior Styling Enhancements
The advances that are distinguishable on the RS Plus are masked to a large extent by the car’s camouflage. It has a grille for larger air intakes within the lower bumper fascia, a small decklid lip spoiler at the back, and four exhaust tips at the back instead of the two seen on the RS model. Also, the alloys appear to be more refined in their outlook. If the final production form retains all this, the RS Plus could look way more athletic than the standard RS which actually has a plain look if we consider it as a hot hatch. A little more differentiation would be welcome from Skoda’s side, and people would not be indifferent to the brand and its cars.
Interior Refinements
It seems that the interior design is still shrouded in mystery. However, I would like to see some enhancements as simple as improved bolstering on the front seats, carbon fiber look plastic parts, and red contrasting stitching to spice things up. An updated system for touchscreens is also expected as of today due to the constant growth in the development of connectivity and Infotainment in automobiles. But there is no radical change on the inside, which can be explained by the fact that ergonomics have always been Octavias’ strength. They may not pay much attention to aesthetic sense and practicality might supersede form.
Launch And Competition
The RS Plus is yet to be launched, with reports indicating that the car will be unveiled at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show as a 2016 model. Pricing will probably be a modest step up from the present Octavia RS at between 22,000 to 24,000 euros. They will be competing with models such as the VW Golf GTI Clubsport Edition and Ford Focus ST. As I have personally tested the drive of the RS before, I can assure everyone that those who are in the hot hatch group will be mesmerized by the performance and features of the Plus, with power and tech, refinement, space, and value to boot.
