The upcoming Mercedes-Benz GLA does not immediately announce that anything dramatic has happened. The shape stays compact, the stance still resembles a raised hatchback, and it remains positioned beneath the recently redesigned GLB. From a distance, the change looks incremental. Underneath, however, the foundation tells a different story.
The move to Mercedes-Benz’s Modular Architecture, or MMA, is the structural pivot. That platform supports both electric and electrified combustion powertrains, which effectively allows the smallest SUV in the range to operate in two distinct mechanical directions without splitting into separate model lines. In practical terms, the GLA becomes more flexible than before.
Exterior
Visually, the front follows the brand’s latest design cues. The grille now stands more upright, although the detailing differs depending on the version. Hybrid models retain cooling inlets, while electric variants replace that area with a closed-off panel. Slim headlights flank the grille and incorporate a horizontal LED brow above star-shaped daytime running lights, a lighting signature already familiar from the newest GLB.

The side profile does not become taller or boxy. Rather, it retains the elevated-hatchback form, which is characterized by brief overhangs and a modest-rising beltline. The addition of some visual tension by the use of pronounced wheel-arch cladding and the flushing door handles the bodywork. The roofline tapers slightly towards the back, and at the back of the vehicle, the star-shaped LED taillights are attached and linked together through an illuminated loop into the tailgate.
Interior
Expectations on the inside are much closer to the recent CLA and GLB. It implies that it features a pixelated dashboard with the pillar-to-pillar MBUX Superscreen, comprising the digital instrument cluster, central infotainment screen and an optional passenger screen underneath one piece of glass. It will have a Google-based virtual assistant, Burmester 3D surround sound and over-the-air updates. Mercedes also cites recycled trims of higher grade, less-polluting surfacing, and better packaging, which should add rear-seat knee room and a little more boot. It is anticipated that the MB drive system will have self-driving and hands-free semi-autonomous highway driving.
Powertrain
The electric versions technically use an 800-volt electrical system and use an 85 kWh NMC battery. The WLTP range estimates can be 337 to 392 miles and DC charging can be 320 kW. The rear-motor design generates 268 hp (200 kW) and 247 ft-lb (335 Nm), while a dual-motor all-wheel drive makes nearly 350 hp (257 kW).

Hybrid variants rely on a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder paired with a 48-volt system. Also, an electric motor integrated into an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. Output spans from around 136 hp (100 kW) to 190 hp (140 kW), available in both front- and all-wheel-drive formats.
It will have an all-electric GLA later this year, followed by hybrid and AMG versions in 2027, and it will compete with the BMW X1 and iX1, Audi Q3, Genesis GV60, Volvo EX30, Polestar 4, and Lexus UX.
